Homestays and adventure in Ecuador

Written by Jessica Prince, 2018 LaSERIO participant

One of my favourite things about this trip was our volunteering week in the homestay in Tena, which was in the Amazon rainforest. We were hosted by an Ecuadorian family, who looked after us, cooked our meals, led some adventures and talked to us about their life in the rainforest teaching us about different plants and their uses. For example, when they cut themselves they hit the wound with poison ivy to stimulate healing.

In return, we helped cook, clean and tidy at the homestay and then went off to help in the school, where we cleaned, fixed, painted and tidied up, and as a special thank you, we donated some of our toiletries and teaching resources to the school and local families.

Whilst in Tena we also had some amazing adventures, one of my favourites was the waterfall walk we went on. I know you can stand under waterfalls in England, but there was something very special about the walk we did there - We adventured through the jungle along a small path that took us straight through plunge pools, up and down small waterfalls and in little streams. It was a very different environment to what we are used to - there were no other people around and it felt like we were really in the middle of nowhere! We also went on these ‘adventures’ in the late afternoon, after a hard working (yet super fun) morning at the school, which made it feel almost like a reward.

We are all very adventurous people, so there was no moaning or lagging behind at all, we all dived straight into everything and rose to every challenge, which made the experience even more enjoyable for us all.
