Midsummer Madness

What did Girlguiding Sussex East county do to relieve the withdrawal symptoms of lockdown?

They went Midsummer Madness! Midsummer Madness 20 was a virtual camp for the county held over the Midsummer solstice weekend with over 700 virtual campers taking part.

The camp was live on our secure Facebook and YouTube channels over the weekend, and there was the opportunity to dip in and out anytime to take part in the activities.

The weekend started with a video of the organising team lip-syncing to High School Musical ‘we’re all in this together’. Using skills builders and UMA’s, activities included creative projects, experiments, cooking as well as den building, indoor and garden scavenger hunts. Other challenges included going to the highest point in the local area whilst doing their daily exercise (social distancing of course), teddy bear afternoon tea, creating the perfect campsite in miniature, zip wire for teddies. (No teddies were injured in the making of this virtual camp!)

Saturday evening saw a live virtual campfire led by Rachel, followed by toasted marshmallows, s’mores and mocktails! Then it was ‘lights out’. Sleepovers were in homemade dens under tables, in conservatories, tents indoors, tents in the garden, even some sleeping in sheds and playhouses and a brave few slept under the stars!

On Sunday morning the more adventurous watched the midsummer sunrise at 4.30am followed by a yoga session. Breakfast saw the camp favourite eggy bread cooked in abundance across the county. More science and cooking activities were completed Sunday morning.

Some of our international friends from Girlguiding across the world joined us with messages of support including some who took part in our big Olave 2019 international camp.

Record sheets were available online for members to record their achievements and take to the unit meeting once Girlguiding resume face to face meetings.

We are pleased to report there was not one item of lost property!

The weekend was a resounding success and every participant will be receiving a Midsummer Madness 2020 badge.
