Applying for the Advocate panel

Written by Abigail D’Souza

The first step of the application process to become an Advocate was an online written application with a range of short and long questions which got to the heart of your interests.

I honestly wasn’t expecting to get any further than this stage because I am notoriously bad at written applications - but clearly, my want for change and perseverance showed through!

My parents are constantly telling me to get down off my soap-box so I guess it makes sense.

Following this, I received an email which stated that my application had been successful and I was invited for an interview. I was incredibly nervous about it because I have only completed interviews at school before. I wasn't sure if I was as prepared as I should have been.

I'm going to be honest and say that I can't remember too much about the interview. There were a few technical glitches that resulted in the interview happening over the phone instead of via Skype, and I remember having a good feeling about it afterwards but it was a blur -probably because of the adrenaline and nerves! I awaited the result avidly, checking my inbox twice daily to ensure I didn't miss anything.

When I finally saw the email I was shaking to see what the results were, and I was incredibly excited when I found that I had been successful in obtaining a place on the panel. I'm so excited to start my placement in October and I am hopeful that I can make the changes I want to see happen, or at the very least encourage others to join a movement and help make the changes they want to see made.
