Queens Guide Award follow along 2

Written by Ellie Barton

Hey, you might have read my recent blog where I bring you along on my Queens Guide Award, here’s part 2!

I’ve made a lot of progress since my last blog, so I’ll go through everything so far.

Service in guiding

So, for Element 1 I have completed over 70 hours as of October, so now it was time to work on my 20-hour project. For the project I’m planning a virtual sleepover for my brownies! We’re going to be doing some garden-based activities to earn our grow your own badge.

For Element 2 I am officially signed off! I used the flexibilities for this section so rather than 2 days and 2 nights it was 2 days and 1 night. I got together with a team, and we planned a virtual Sleepover for Rangers and young leaders. The event went well! We ran 6 skill builder activities and explained the Guiding program, as there’s still some confusion around it for some.

My Element 3 was signed off a while ago! You can read my previous blog to see what I did.

Element 4 I have just started. I’m part of the LaSER Champions so I’ll be working on a range of projects with them over the next two years. I’ve just started my first two, a sustainability challenge and badge-spirations which you’ll hear about soon!

Outdoor challenge

So, for Element 1 I’m stuck with whether I should do my Lead Away permit or wait until September when I’ll be 18 to do my 18-30 residential instead. So, I haven’t made any progress here yet.

My Element 2 was signed off a while ago, you can read about that in my previous blog.

Personal skill development

For my personal skill section, I’ve chose writing, blogging and social media. I’m doing this element via the Hive! My current challenges are ‘Publish at least 10 blogs as part of a series’ and ‘write 25 overall pieces for the Hive’ Including blogs and social media posts.

Here are some of my blogs:

Community action

For my community action project, I have chosen to do Women in STEM! For my research project I wanted to research roles, company’s and some statistics around women in STEM. For my practical project, I helped with the STEMtacular event you’ve seen recently! And I’m trying to make an activity pack!

Residential experience

I haven’t properly started this section yet, but I know Girlguiding run residentials throughout the year for this section and gold DofE, so I’m hoping to do this!

So that’s everything I’ve done so far! It seems like a lot, and it has been a lot of hard work, but it’s been rewarding to complete! I’ve nearly finished my Yong Leader Qualification from volunteering in a unit, and I’ve met a lot of great people and had chances to be on the planning team of some amazing events! I’m so happy I’ve done this so far and can’t wait to do even more!
