Vote 100 Q&A: women can do anything!

Written by Rebecca Harris - Leader in training, 1st Worthing Guides

On Wednesday 12 September, Worthing Cissbury division Senior Section got the amazing opportunity to ask questions to a panel of women who are high up within the workplace. This included Youth Mayor Katie Waters, Worthing Town Centre Initiative Manager Sharon Clark, County Councillors Debbie Kennard and Elizabeth Sparkes, and Borough Councillor Louise Murphy.

This opportunity marked 100 years of the beginnings of women gaining the vote. We all got to ask our questions and query the panel on how they came to be in their position - and the challenges they had faced. We asked questions about what it’s like to have these roles and what the issues that they care about are, as well as exploring the reasons why young people should vote. It opened our minds further to the idea that women can do anything! We can get to anywhere in the workplace: these women were proof of that.

We would like to thank the organisers Karen Hopper and Shirley Robinson Viney for giving us this incredible opportunity and a great evening. It is people like them who encourage girls to push boundaries and become anything they want to. The evening also showed us all how far women have come since 1918. We have gone from working in stereotypical jobs, such as secretarial work, to being tasked to manage large businesses, represent the districts we live in and organise huge community events. It is events like these that make me feel extremely proud to be a woman - and even prouder to be within Girlguiding.

This event was funded from a grant Girlguiding Worthing Cissbury division received from the Women's Vote Centenary Grant Scheme. You can read about their experience applying for external funding opportunities here.
