" I'd recommend guiding to anyone who's young at heart "
CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS
All members of Girlguiding UK, from Rainbows to the Trefoil Guild will have many chances to be a part of this extra special year. The celebrations began across the country in September 2009. After a jam-packed year of once-in-a-lifetime adventures, projects, festivals, residential and above all, fun, we will join together for a fantastic finale event in October 2010.
Celebration plans are well under way at a national level and will provide the chance to learn about our rich and varied history in an interactive way. It will also give us the chance to celebrate the successes and achievements of Girlguiding UK over the past 100 years with members and friends of the organisation.
The plans for the Centenary are currently being finalised and it promises to be a landmark year full of surprises. We've got lots of events and opportunities planned that will enable us all to shout out about guiding in the 21st century and dream of what's in store for the next 100 years.
Launch Parties
On the first Saturday in September 1909 a few groups of determined girls 'gatecrashed' the first Boy Scout Rally at Crystal Palace in London and demanded 'something for the girls'. Just months later the Guide movement was formed.
100 years' on, 6,000 girls returned to Crystal Palace to celebrate the launch of Girlguiding UK's Centenary. The event was one of 640 being held across the UK this weekend involving over 326,000 Girlguiding UK members.
The vision of the launch of the Centenary was to bring together 1.2 million people over the weekend of 5-6 September 2009 to celebrate 100 years of Guiding. We want everyone to realize that they are part of something bigger, so in years to come they can say 'I was there'.
Guiding is one of the most recognisable aspects of life in the UK and we want to let the public know that we are still leading the way in giving girls and young women unique experiences.
