Cudham

The Shaws has 92 acres of unspoilt countryside in the heart of Kent but only 16 miles from central London, 30 minutes by train to London; 10 minutes from M25 junction 4. One of the largest areas of chalk grassland and ancient woodlands in Greater London of which part has been designated a Site of Scientific Interest. You can explore where Charles Darwin once studied for the “Origin of the Species.”

Camping Sites:

Plenty of choice - small glades for Patrol or Ranger Units - many areas for Unit camps or events — or large flat fields for Division, County or Region gatherings. Fully equipped or bring your own; all sites have mains water and access to flush toilets and showers; wooding is easy.

Silver Birches:

Architect-designed and opened in 1997, Silver Birches has central heating, double glazing, flush toilets and showers, a fully-equipped kitchen and a large attractive activity room. The wide verandah allows for sheltered activities and there is plenty of grass!

Suitable for 32 residents:

  • Dormitory: 24 sleepers in bunk beds.
  • Room 2: 4 sleepers in single beds + washbasin.
  • Room 3: 2 sleepers in bunk beds.
  • Room 4: 2 sleepers in extra wide bunks

Badgers:

The recent major refurbishment included improvements to fully-equipped kitchen, washrooms and installation of central heating and double-glazing, and new bunk beds. The activity area allows for indoor pursuits and there is ample grassed area immediately outside.

Suitable for 31 residents:

  • Dormitory: 24 sleepers in bunk beds
  • Room 2: 4 sleepers in single beds + washbasin
  • Room 3: 2 sleepers in bunk beds + washbasin
  • Room 4: 1 sleeper in single bed + washbasin

Copps Cottage:

Originally designed for girls with disabilities, it nestles in the valley on the Lower site. Fully equipped kitchen with adjoining activity room. Electric storage heaters, flush toilets and hot showers. Immediately outside is a paved area and there is plenty of grass space for activities.

The Resource Centre:

To aid exploration and discovery at The Shaws, the Centre is full of things to do as well as information on the local habitat and inhabitants.

Activities and Facilities

  • Adventure Area - purpose built to develop co-ordination, agility and concentration— as well as being fun!
  • Archery - learn new skills with equipment available under the guidance of a qualified leader. Badge Making kit - is available to make pin badges to your own designs.
  • Bouncy Ball - six foot inflatable ball will stimulate ideas for games and hours of laughter out of doors.
  • Camp Fire Circle - is an ancient quarry can seat 300 folks on wooden benches. A great place for Camp Fire or Guides’ Own.
  • Camp Shop - sells badges, souvenirs and gifts.
  • Grass Sledging - down the splendid run can create confidence and is exciting too!
  • Nature Trails - lead to personal discoveries for all who seek to look, listen, feel and scent the air.
  • Orienteering packs - will challenge your compass and map reading abilities.
  • Parachute games - will help develop social interaction in your group in an informal way.
  • Pioneering - will test stamina and devlop team confidence.
