Peer Education

Peer educators, aged 14 – 25, are trained to deliver sessions on topics that matter to girls today. Girls are more likely to listen to those who are of a similar age to them. Peer educators draw on their own experiences allowing girls to fully engage and relate and empower younger girls to combat issues they may face in life, inspiring them and equipping them with life-long skills. Peer education Sessions are available for Brownies, Guides and Ranger Units.

What happens in a peer education session?
Developed with expert partners, each session consists of creating a set of guidelines, discussing and defining key areas of the chosen topic before exploring ways to combat the issue being addressed, using a variety of techniques, so there is something for everyone. This encourages participation so that others can learn from their peers, gaining a more well-rounded understanding of the topic. Each session is tailor-made to suit the unit, with different activities for different age groups.

When would a session take place?
During your normal meeting time, on a previously arranged date. If your meeting is less than 90 minutes it may be best to split the session over two meetings, but this can be discussed.

Peer education topics

Safe the World is about the situations young people face every day. It tackles the topic of safety by looking at how: everyone experiences safety differently, how we can spot and deal with unsafe behaviours and how we can empower everyone to become upstanders and campaign for a safer world for all. It’s all about helping young people to thrive!

Safe the World counts towards Take Action UMA minutes. 60 UMA minutes for Brownies & 90 UMA minutes for Guides & Rangers, regardless of how long the session lasts.

Safe the World: What would be required of me as a leader?

- Have a pre-session conversation on the phone, around two weeks before the session
- Before the session, send out a pre-session parent letter
- Allow time for your unit to complete a pre-session evaluation
- Set aside one meeting for the session (as arranged with the Peer Educator) and actively support the session
- You can help your unit complete some UMA and SB activities to explore the topic further (this isn’t required for the badge)
- Girls can then earn the Safe the World badge!

Breaking Free is an exciting forward-thinking resource which focuses on challenging gender stereotypes. The session helps girls identify and challenge stereotypes so they feel empowered to enjoy their hobbies, gain skills they’re interested in and bust the restrictions that so-called ‘stereotypes’ could place on their lives.

‘55% of girls aged 7-21 say gender stereotypes affect their ability to say what they think.’ (2017 Girlguiding Girl’s Attitudes Survey)
