"I marched like a girl!"

Written by Vikki Goodridge

On Sunday 10 June, I joined approximately 100,000 women and girls who came together in London, Cardiff, Belfast and Edinburgh for PROCESSIONS2018, a march to celebrate 100 years of women’s suffrage.

With friends, I proudly donned my green scarf and filed into the green section of the procession in London. Next to me there were thousands of women of every age, race and background doing the exact same thing, either in matching green or in white or purple, the iconic suffragette colours.

The impact from the ground was impressive, heightened by the magnificent and extensive array of banners and flags that bobbed up and down as we marched. Many banners followed the style seen at the original rallies, while others adopted a more modern approach. Each was unique and spectacular in its own way. One that particularly caught my eye belonged to a Girlguiding group, I believe from Girlguiding Sussex West county, that said “march like a girl”. To me, this summed up the day: women coming together in solidarity, to acknowledge the work and determination of the brave, passionate women of the Suffragette movement who allow us to “march like a girl” today.

I can't really do the day justice in this blog post, but can just say it was fantastic, humbling, and inspiring, marking an important day in history and womankind.
