A to Z

Celebrate 2026 with the A–Z Challenge!

Throughout 2026 we’re inviting all units across the region to take part in our A–Z Challenge. It's a fun and flexible challenge, and how you complete it is entirely up to you and your young members. Whatever way you take part, every letter is a chance to try something new!

Need inspiration? Here are some ideas to get started:

  • An evening of A-Z activities
  • A term doing activities from across the alphabet
  • A weekend away full of A-Z activities
  • Visiting places for the letters A-Z (you could also include virtual visits)
  • A-Z of foods
  • A-Z of crafts
  • Speed challenge – A-Z of activities to complete in 1 or 2 hours
  • Do a fundraising activity to raise money for a charity that helps children, either in the UK or abroad to learn to read – one of the basic skills of life where A-Z is so important. Look at The Book Trust or The Book bus.
  • Celebrate cultural festivals throughout the year or in the term, counting them as the relevant letters of the alphabet. For example: Ashura, Christmas, Diwali, Easter, Eid, Guru Nanak Gurpurab, Hanukkah, Hogmanay, Holi, Lunar New Year, Passover, Ramadan etc.
  • You could go on a walk to a local place, perhaps a high point for a view
  • You could also plan a walk that will challenge you more - which might be towards achieving a walking qualification. Let us know the name of the place by emailing our walking advisor on walkingadviser@girlguidinglaser.org.uk and we’ll add you to our A-Z Walking Challenge list – this could be as an individual or a group.
  • As a region, our intention is also to have groups take part in international visits to countries, cities/towns or castles which cover the whole alphabet – so maybe you will decide this is the year for an international trip for your unit/district/division. Find out more about our International A-Z challenge.
  • If you’re completing your DofE Award you could add in the A to Z to any of your sections
    - Expedition ideas: A-Z scavenger hunt; visit places for each letter of the alphabet
    - Skill ideas: play a song for each letter of the alphabet while learning an instrument; learn a word for each letter of the alphabet while learning a language; bake/cook an item for each letter of the alphabet!
    - Physical ideas: do an A-Z parkrun challenge – go to a different park run for each letter; run a route that “draws” each letter and record it in a running app, like Strava art.
    - Volunteering goal ideas: run any of the above A-Z challenges with a unit you volunteer at (helping them to get their A-Z badge too)

The A-Z of International

We're challenging groups from across the region to take part in an international trip in 2026 and visit another country - or city or town in another country - for every letter of the alphabet. How many can London and South East England members reach?
