10 Tuesday: Top ten New Years resolutions and activities

Written by Clare Paske

It's always difficult to think of some resolutions that aren't the same-old, same-old every year, so I have compiled a lost of my top 10 ideas that you could use or adapt yourself!

1. Save money

Why not try the 1P Saving Challenge? You could save £671.61 by the end of the year!

2. Spend more time with family and friends

Life is too short to waste it! We should focus on the people we care about and who care about us. This is the best way to stay happy!

3. Read more

Reading is a great way to gain more knowledge and exercise your brain. Start by finding a bit of time in the day for reading and make it a regular habit to use this time. Find the genre you like and, in no time, it will be easy to go through 20 or more books in a year!

4. Learn a new language

Not only can learning a new language help improve your communication skills, it could also open many doors. There are plenty of resources to help for free and it’s a fun activity to do in your spare time. Why not try Duolingo? It has many languages to learn for free in a fun and challenging way.

5. Be more punctual and on time

Here you can find ten ways to help yourself be more punctual.

6. Become more environmentally friendly

Start recycling, stop using single-use plastics; these are just some of the more common ways to become more environmentally friendly. Here are Girlguiding’s five Plastic Promises to try in 2020: start using a reusable water bottle; start using an alternative to disposable cutlery; start using a reusable box or reusable wrapping instead of clingfilm; start using a reusable coffee cup; stand up and speak out about cutting plastic waste - and make big brands listen! You can make your #PlasticPromise on the website.

7. Get into shape

Remember, it’s not all about numbers! Focus on both the mental and physical elements of your health. Tracking apps like ‎MyFitnessPal can help.

8. Get more quality sleep

With bleeping gadgets and flashing lights from TVs, smartphones and tablets, it can be hard to get enough sleep. We should all be aiming for at least 8 hours sleep - here you can find some simple tips.

9. Volunteer and give more time to charity

If you're a Ranger, have you considered helping out at a Rainbow, Brownie or Guide unit? You could even do your Young Leader Qualification! If you're already doing this, why not suggest volunteering in Girlguiding to friends and family - it doesn't have to be a full-time commitment and it's good fun!

10. Live life to the fullest

It's 2020 - a new decade! With the aid of your New Year's resolutions, you'll be on track to having a great year. Plan days out with family, take up some new hobbies, be kind, be caring, give time and above all have fun!
