Girlguiding LaSER hails a New Dawn

Thirty Guides and members of The Senior Section from Girlguiding LaSER were the first people to see ‘New Dawn’ unlit, at an exclusive event in June.

‘New Dawn’ is a unique piece of artwork created by light installation artist Mary Branson, to celebrate the history of women’s suffrage and to serve as a permanent reminder of what individual women did to enable women’s voices to be heard.

We were privileged to attend a session on women’s suffrage, followed by a presentation by the artist herself, who talked us through the inspiring journey which led her to create the masterpiece, which is a permanent light installation displayed in Westminster Hall.

The piece symbolises the scrolls on which Acts of Parliament are written and is linked to the tide at Tower Bridge. It epitomises the strength of character of the suffragettes, who started a movement which continues to evolve today.
