Raspberry Ripple - 6 March 2014

Yellow is the new Raspberry!

5th Frimley Brownies and their Leaders had such an exciting evening on 15 January 2014 when they received a Royal visit from HRH the Countess of Wessex and the Chief Guide Gill Slocombe. The Countess came to take part in The Big Brownie Birthday video produced by Girlguiding and she was very much at home, sitting on the floor joining the Brownies in their sticking and cutting to make a Chinese Dragon boat (one of the activities taken from the Big Brownie Birthday Challenge Badge). After joining in with eating cupcakes the Countess was presented with a posy of flowers. At the end of the evening, the Brownies were asked to sum-up their experience, and their replies were; ā€œawesomeā€, ā€œamazingā€ and ā€œsensationalā€, among other things.

A BIG thank you to Girlguiding for giving 5th Frimley Brownies such a great opportunity!

Swanley and Darent Valley Division ā€˜visit’ Kenya

Rainbows, Brownies and Guides from Swanley and Darent Valley Division ā€˜visited’ Kenya as part of their World Thinking Day celebrations. Kenya was chosen as the country to think about this year as one of the District Commissioners, Angela Brewer, visited for World Thinking Day 2013 and was moved by the children living in the slum towns.

During the day, the girls learnt about life in Kenya and about the life of Lord and Lady Baden-Powell. They also learnt about the work of Water Aid. However, the main focus of the day was to make pretty dresses to send to some of the children living in the slums. The Rainbows, Brownies and Guides enjoyed making and decorating pillow-case dresses and by the end of the day had approximately 50 dresses ready to be sent out to Kenya later in the year.

Youth United - schools outreach work

Girlguiding LaSER Development Workers have been working in partnership with The Jimmy Mizen Foundation and David Idowu Foundation on their project Release The Peace to encourage more children and young people to get involved in uniformed groups.

The Jimmy Mizen and David Idowu Foundations have engaged over 25 schools and colleges in London with up to 60 children and young people at each session. The workshops encourage children to: keep safe, learn lifesaving first response with St John Ambulance, and take action to create peaceful communities.

Development Worker Lynne Woolley said;

ā€œIt has been very inspiring to work with the Jimmy Mizen and David Idowu Foundations. They have helped to raise the profile of Girlguiding with schools, parents and pupils. We have met lots of enthusiastic children and young people who have never heard of Girlguiding but are now eager to find out more and join us. Schools and colleges have been really interested in Girlguiding opportunities, such as offering to support new units and wider outreach work with both parents and pupils. It has also been a great opportunity to develop school taster activities and growing guiding outreach resources."
