World Scout Jamboree in Japan - Guide Member

Arriving in Tokyo we were met by our hosts at the airport. Along with one other scout from our unit, we travelled to Machida district where the local group had organised a traditional Japanese buffet for us all after the long flight. After the meal and opening ceremony we were taken back to our hosts house. During the day we spent there the local scouts took us around Tokyo to visit the giant Buddha at Kamakura and temples through out the city. The family were extremely welcoming and it was really interesting to live in a proper Japanese household. Before leaving the next day our host family prepared a Japanese barbecue and ordered us dominos.

To reach Yamaguchi where the camp was taking place we had to travel for 4 1/2 hours on the bullet train. After arriving and setting up camp on the jamboree site itself, the following day we attended the opening ceremony. Over 30,000 other scouts and guides were there from all different countries around the world, which was amazing to see. Over the next ten days we spent time taking part in a great range of activities including the global development village (learning more about issues facing people from all different countries), visiting the memorial at Hiroshima, water sports, nature programs and much more. There was lots to do on the site itself including talent competitions and games and activities.

Arriving back in Tokyo we were staying in a hotel in Minato. During the day we travelled around the city, visiting some interesting tourist attractions. The 634m-high TOKYO SKYTREE which we visited, was recognized by the Guinness World Records Company in 2011 as the tallest tower in the world. We also travelled to various temples and were able to experience real Japanese culture. We got the opportunity to go to Shibuya crossing and markets near there selling souvenirs and Japanese things. In the evening we went to joypolis, an arcade in Minato. The technology was really modern and it was an amazing experience. I loved visiting Japan and I would really recommend taking part in international trips like this one in the future
