Coronation roundup

At unit meetings or community events, as volunteers or Coronation Champions, members from across our region have been celebrating the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

Here are just a few of the highlights.

Volunteers in action

Girlguiding volunteers from all around the region were on hand in London to help coronation events run smoothly.

On Coronation Day, volunteers like Ellie Muzzlewhite from Middlesex East county braved the rain to hand out flags, answer questions, and point people in the right direction, serving as extra eyes and ears.

"I had such a great time - it was an honour. I also met lots of really exciting people, including Dame Emma Thompson, which was a personal highlight. The atmosphere in London was incredible!"

Helen Surley from Sussex Central county led the London and South East volunteer team at the Garden Party at Buckingham Palace on the Tuesday.

"It was just such a lovely, lovely day - an amazing opportunity! Starting with lunch inside Buckingham Palace, then soaking up the fabulous atmosphere throughout the afternoon. We shared a number of different volunteer roles around the garden. It really did feel an honour to be there and to represent London and South East."

A Big Lunch royal visit

Girls and leaders from Cranleigh Village district in Surrey West county greeted the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh during the village’s Big Lunch event, where they also held a garden games stall.

"It was a wonderful opportunity to connect our local community with such an incredible moment in history. The King’s coronation is something we will all remember forever."

Coronation Champions

We have four volunteers in our region recognised as Coronation Champions for their outstanding volunteer work: Mary Zoeller from Surrey East county, Heather Fowler from Greater London West county, Julie Mutton-Hughes from Kent West county and Jill Hedgecock from London South West county. All three attended the Coronation Concert at Windsor – we hope you had a fabulous time!

“All the Brownies are so excited and happy that Brown Owl won this award. When she told us about the award, we clapped really hard. Brown Owl deserves this award for always making sure we have the best time at brownies every week. Brownies is so much fun, Brown Owl always helps everybody with a big smile.”

The Big Help Out

Guides from Burgess Hill in Sussex Central county got more than they bargained for during their Big Help Out litter pick when they pulled three chairs and two shopping trollies from a pond! Their unusual discovery earned them a spot on the BBC’s coronation live stream.

1st Walton-on-the-Hill Guides had a great evening weeding the sensory trail at the Epsom Riding for the Disabled Association.

Unit celebrations

From campfires to crazy croquet, units all around the region have been celebrating.

3rd Haywards Heath Brownies in Sussex Central county dressed as “all the King’s horses and all the King’s men” in the Haywards Heath town coronation parade and Rainbows from Hersham in Surrey West county made coronation horses and completed a showjumping course.

And no celebration would be complete without a treat or two. 3rd Eastcote Guides in Middlesex North West baked stained glass crown biscuits: fresh-made biscuit dough with cut out windows filled with crushed boiled sweets, melted when baked. They look delicious, girls!
