Celebrating local connections

Making links with local government is a great way to both increase Girlguiding's visibility and create meaningful connections within communities. Whether it's local events, awards, or fundraising - or having the honour of being a mayoral charity of the year like Girlguding Epsom division - there are many ways to get involved. Girls can also let their voices be heard about the issues they care about locally - have a look at the make change or influence skills builders, the campaigning badge for Guides, or get in touch as part of a Guiding for Good project.

Mayoral award

Congratulations to Jennifer Dudley, leader for 4th Acton Brownies, Guides and Rangers, who received an award and a special badge from the outgoing Ealing Mayor, Councillor Anthony Kelly, in March this year. Following nomination by a parent of one of her Rangers, Jennifer was one of the first recipients of the Mayor of Ealing's Award for Service to Citizens of Ealing in recognition of over 40 years of volunteering for Girlguiding within the borough. Jennifer was also the county commissioner for the former Middlesex South West county, and is the region's lead volunteer for safeguarding as well as a trainer.

It is amazing to have guiding parents that thought enough about me to nominate me for this new prestigious award. I am completely honoured that the Mayor of Ealing chose to present this award to me.

— Jennifer Dudley

Quizzing for charity

Haywards Heath Town district and 10th and 11th Haywards Heath Brownie units recently held a fundraising quiz in support of the Mayor's chosen charity, the Dame Vera Lynn Children's Charity, which supports under 5s with cerebral palsy and other motor learning impairments. The Mayor, Councillor Duncan Pascoe, came to 10th Haywards Heath Brownies meeting to be presented with the cheque for the £150 raised. Many thanks to Brownie leader and district events administrator Sharon-Jane Davis who organised the event and came up with the quiz questions, and to the Mayor who acted as quiz compere. It was pure coincidence that a team from the town council won the main prize!
