Guiding for Good Winter Warm Up

After the huge success of Guiding for Good last year, we're back this October with Winter Warm Up. Over the whole month, we'll focus on helping those in need over the winter through supporting initiatives such as food banks and winter clothing banks, or taking action to help nature over the winter months.

Winter is a particularly difficult time for families struggling to provide for their children and for the elderly living in reduced circumstances at a time of high food and fuel costs. That’s why we want to help where we can, working with charities and organisations which provide help and support.

It may seem hard to believe during this hot summer, but winter and its challenges - rising fuel and food costs and colder weather - will soon return.

The number of people needing to use a food bank more than once has increased by 35% over the last few years. In 2025, more than 2.6 million emergency food parcels were provided by Trussell food banks to people experiencing financial hardship, And data from the Baby Bank Alliance shows that last year over 3.5 million essential items — including clothes, nappies, prams and cots given to families by baby banks.

About Guiding for Good Winter Warm Up

We know from Girlguiding's Girls' Attitudes Survey that feeling part of a community, giving back, and speaking up is increasingly important to girls and especially to Girlguiding members (Impact Report 2023). It’s also an opportunity to put our promise into action and increase our visibility in our communities.

We’d like to see as many members as possible serving their communities and helping others through creating or getting involved in local Winter Warm Up projects during October 2026 (and beyond!).

Think of a project your unit, district, division or even county could do to take action in your local community under the Winter Warm Up theme. It could be a visit to a residential home, working with a food bank, or helping nature get ready for winter. Ideally, your project will have you visible in or interacting with your community.

See the ideas below for inspiration – these pages will be continuously updated with ideas and information over the summer and in the run up to Winter Warm Up month. Or use your own ideas and contacts in your community. You'll also find a range of resources to help you along the way and share what you’re up to.

Of course! We'll email everyone who signed up after the week and ask you to complete a short survey after you've completed your activity or project. As a thank you, we'll post you your free badges (postage also free of charge). We'll aim to send these in one batch in the second half of term.
